The 2020 United States presidential election was the 59th quadrennial presidential election, held in the days before and on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. The Democratic ticket of former Vice President Joe Biden defeated incumbent Republican President Donald Trump. Trump became the first incumbent president since George H. W. Bush in 1992, and the eleventh in American history, to lose re-election. The election took place during the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic and saw many ballots cast by mail before Election Day, resulting in the most votes tallied in any presidential election. Trump received the most votes for any incumbent president in American history, and Biden received the most votes cast for any presidential candidate. Controversy ensued over the way voting was conducted due to the pandemic, and the Trump campaign contested the election results in several key swing states, culminating in some Trump supporters storming the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, during certification of the Electoral College votes.
